Introduction


The Association of Finnish Music Schools

is an umbrella organization for music schools and conservatories with 99 members all over Finland

promotes high professional and artistic standards in the member schools and does PR work in their behalf 

looks after the interests of its member schools and makes sure they are reflected in music policy and general cultural policy on the national level

is responsible for the formulation and distribution of examination standards

administrates and promotes international relations in the field of music through its membership in the EMU (European Union of Music Schools), NMKU (Nordic Union of Music and Culture Schools) and ISME-Finland ( the International Society for Music Education)

is founded in 1956

89 music schools and 10 conservatories around Finland

the music schools have a total of 60 000 pupils and employ about 3500 teachers

about 800 students take professional music training at conservatories

the music schools provide 50 000 hours of instruction per week

The Finnish Government funds basic training in music with a total of 55 million € annually

the state grants cover 48%, local government payments 32%, and tuition fees 20% of the total annual expenditure of music institutes

Average tuition per term is 400 €
